Renato Chiarizia 1942-2019
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Renato Chiarizia. He passed away last Wednesday after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 31st.
Trained as a classic separation scientist, Renato was an internationally renowned expert in chemical separations, with a specialty in solvent extraction. As the leading separation scientist in M Wing, a role he has held since the 1980’s, he played a critical role in realizing the importance of organic-phase structural correlations in solvent-extraction systems. After his retirement 12 years ago, Renato continued to serve as a valued consultant for the HESS group, providing us with access to his experience and knowledge in the broad field of separation sciences. Of particular note was his continued interest in the field and his willingness to mentor us all, young and not-so young alike. He will be greatly missed.
