National Postdoc Appreciation Week!

The fourth annual celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) will be held September 16 – 20, 2013.

NPAW-LogoNext week institutions across the country will honor the contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to advancing their fields by celebrating National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week (NPAW).   In 2010, Congress passed resultion HR1545 establishing the third week in September as “National Postdoc Appreciation Week.” You can read the resolution in its entirety as archived in the Library of Congress and linked here.

Of special interest is the acknowledgement that the postdoctoral experience should include career and professional development to improve training and career opportunities. Next week, we have two events that are directly aligned with these goals. On Wednesday, September 18th, two of our Senior Talent Acquisition Specialists will provide their insight into how scientists and engineers can improve their chances with prospective employers by engaging company representatives in the right way. On Friday, September 20th, Director Isaacs and the PSA Board will lead a discussion on mentoring during our next Open Forum with the Director. All postdocs are encouraged to take part in these events.

Another way that you can celebrate NPAW is by activating your affiliate membership with the National Postdoctoral Association. The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) has led the efforts to gain much-deserved recognition for postdoc scholars and has continuously worked to enhance the experience for postdocs everywhere. As a sustaining member of the NPA, Argonne postdocs and staff can become affiliate members for free. All you have to do is sign up. Don’t know how? Read me.

As an affiliate member, you’ll be able to capitalize on the many resources the NPA has pulled together for postdocs. These include professional development tool kits, individual development plan templates, resources for international postdocs, postdoc society toolkits and many more. I strongly encourage you to join!

Look for invitations in your email inbox and mark your calendars for next week!
