Vanpool FAQs

Q: How many people do you need to start a vanpool?

A: Pace Vanpools are designed to transport a group of 5-13 people to work. Employees who live and work near one another and share similar schedules can form a group that conveniently gets them to and from work.

Q: How much does vanpooling cost?

A: Cost varies depending on the number of riders and the distance travelled to work. Generally the cost ranges from about $80 – $120 per month. See the Pace price chart for fares specific to your area. The fare covers all costs of the vanpool including fuel, maintenance, insurance, tolls, roadside assistance and car washes. One person is asked to volunteer to be the primary driver. He or she does not pay a fare and also receives 300 personal miles of van use each month.

Q: Do the driver’s unused personal miles of van use rollover each month?

A: Yes

Q: What is the Employee Pre-Tax Commuter Benefit program and how do I sign up?

A: Argonne provides a pre-tax commuter benefit. Employees who vanpool or take public transportation to work can allocated funds for those commuting costs and eligible parking costs to be set aside prior to taxes. This enables employees to save up to 40% on commuting costs in addition to the financial benefits that vanpooling and public transportation already provide. Additional information about the new pre-tax commuter benefit program is available on Inside Argonne. (Hyperlink accessible to employees on site or through VPN)

Q: How do vanpools drop off and pick up its members?

A: Vanpool riders can be dropped off and picked up right in front of their respective Argonne buildings, increasing the convenience of their daily commute, and front-row reserved vanpool parking spots have been reserved across the laboratory site for drivers’ convenience.
