Our Activities and Recurring Events
The HLC hosts many events throughout the year. Events are specifically designed to reach the Hispanic/Latino community, as well as to reach the Argonne community.
Educational Outreach Day – Hispanic Heritage Month
Our annual Educational Outreach Day seeks to inspire bright, middle school students in the STEM careers. We choose one school from the area and invite up to 40 of their most inquisitive minds to the Laboratory for a full day of learning. They are immersed in exciting hands-on experiments in different areas of science supported by the Laboratory. This highly interactive event also allows the students to have small group discussions with our scientific and support staff about careers in STEM.
After a morning packed with hands-on experiments, they enjoy lunch with Argonne mentors in an informal setting designed to encourage the students to discuss their ambitions. After lunch, they work with Argonne advisors to develop a presentation of their “discoveries.”
Tamale Fundraiser
Selling over 200 dozen tamales each time it occurs, the tamale fundraiser raises money for our scholarship fund. Tamales aren’t the only thing for sale; we also sell fresh and sweet churros! All food is pre-ordered and prepaid. Everything is available for pick up at noon on the fundraiser date. Look out for a MyArgonne announcement for the next tamale fundraiser to purchase cheese tamales, pork tamales, chicken tamales, and churros. Members will receive an additional notice in their e-mails.
Holiday Luncheon
Every holiday season, we gather for a club luncheon catered by a local restaurant. Our club President discusses general guidance and plans for the upcoming year before we enjoy our holiday meal. This social event serves as an informational gathering and a networking opportunity. Join us for a wonderful time, raffles, and giveaways. Spanish Lessons
Although not an annual event, we sponsor Spanish lessons for HLC members and Argonne staff. The 6-weeks of lessons, taught by an Argonne employee, help individuals learn the basics of speaking Spanish. See MyArgonne for information when the next Spanish course is available.
