DOE Mile: Virtual lab vs. lab race plus a fun run/walk

Argonne’s Running Club and Health and Employee Wellness Division will host a “DOE Mile” run and walk Tuesday, May 7, 2019. All employees and site occupants are welcome to join in a timed one-mile run or walk. In addition, there will also be traditional fun run and walk for those wanting more distance and/or a less competitive pace.

This year at least 11 other DOE laboratories will hold their DOE Mile event on the same day to foster some friendly inter-lab competition. Each will measure a mile course on its campus, hold a race, and merge results to determine overall placing. A cross-country racing scoring system will be used.

Last year, nearly 1,000 DOE employees from six DOE laboratories took part; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory claimed the top men’s and women’s individual titles, while Sandia National Laboratories was named “Fastest Lab.”

At Argonne, registration will start at 11:30 a.m. at Freund Lodge, and HEW representatives will lead a stretching session. Both the timed race and the fun run/ walk will begin at noon with staggered starting times approximately 5 minutes apart. Please park in the Building 362 lot, as space is limited in the lodging area. Refreshments will be available at the finish.

Walkers and runners will receive 100 Virgin Pulse points, top finishers in the one-mile timed race will receive 500 points, and there will be a raffle for 5,000 points.
