Understanding ion and water organization near graphene oxide is critical for developing materials for rare earth separations. This work combines interfacial X-ray scattering and sum frequency generation spectroscopy techniques to elucidate how heavy and light lanthanides adsorb to graphene oxide and carboxylic acid thin films.
